Expoziţia Thin/Subţire (preia titlul uneia dinte lucrările expuse), oferă o privire analitică subiectivă, asupra unei lumi şablonizate, construită sub presiunea lui trebuie (trebuie să ai ceva de spus, trebuie fii convingător, trebuie să captezi atenţia, să atragi, să seduci etc.); se construieşte pe strategii, teorii, premeditări; dar şi o privire asupra unei lumi la fel de concretă chiar dacă mai puţin la vedere – cea a unor structuri interne corpului uman.

Un discurs constituit din contradicţii, din semne de întrebare şi ezitări, căutări de sine şi căutări de sens, pare că este un discurs îndepărtat de ceea ce este stringent, imperios necesar climatului (artistic românesc) actual.

Cu toate astea, nu doresc decât să ofer semnele mele de întrebare, ca o întâmpinare a altor posibile semne...

În perioada 20 septembrie – 7 octombrie 2011 va avea loc în Bucureşti, la UNAgaleria, evenimentul ‘New G(o)ods 2010!’, organizat de Centrul Ceh.

‘New G(o)ods!’ prezintă lucrările unei noi şi promiţătoare generaţii de designeri cehi – câştigătorii Premiilor Naţionale Ceheşti pentru Studenţii la Design din 2010. Cu nişte concepte jucăuşe şi o estetică unică, studenţii şcolilor ceheşti de arhitectură, design industrial, design grafic şi design vestimentar oferă atât soluţii pentru problemele mediului, cât şi pentru o populaţie pe cale de îmbătrânire. Vizitatorii vor avea şansa de a vedea şi prototipul unic denumit “Tvor”, desemnat marele caştigător al Premiilor Naţionale, ce reprezintă o lampă inteligentă care găseşte întotdeauna cel mai întunecat loc dintr-o cameră şi îl luminează. “Am observat in trecerea mea prin medii familiare, lucruri socante; prin medii necunoscute , lucruri “ale mele”. Am simtit nevoia sa le asimilez in ceea ce fac, in lucrarile mele, concret, folosindu-le ca suporturi , lipindu-le pe suporturi, desenandu-le sau notandu-le sub forma de cuvinte.

Love story pentru ca mi-am dat seama ca in experientele mele (creative) iubirea e intotdeauna determinanta, fie prin prezenta fie prin absenta.

Love story pentru ca aceste imagini sunt reflectari ale unor trairi afective marcante pentru mine, ele sunt cadre mai mult sau mai putin reusite din filmul meu interior, singura sansa de exorcizare a emotiilor reprimate, singurul mod in care am stiut sa le aduc un omagiu.”

Expozitia va fi deschisa in perioada 8 -17 iunie 2011 si va fi inclusa in circuitul expozitional al evenimentului Noaptea Galeriilor din data de 10 iunie.

Aparut din initiativa Muzeului Orb, Congresul I este primul dintr-o serie de evenimente dedicate reunirii, analizei si redefinirii institutiilor spectrale de tot felul. Institutia Spectrala este platforma conceptuala in perimetrul careia se intalnesc diverse institutii în curs de legitimare ocupand un spatiu hibrid intre autoritate, arta contemporana, institutionalizare si producere de discurs public.

“Proiectele studenților constituie un exercițiu de a intra în dialog cu diferitele forme de imagini care ne înconjoară (de la exemple din istoria artei până la cele oferite de mass-media și programe de tip reality-show). Geert Lovink (nascut 1959, Amsterdam) este Profesor de Interactive Media la Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), Profesor de Teorie Media la European Graduate School, si Conferentiar de New Media la University of Amsterdam (UvA). Detine un master in stiinte politice la Universitatea din Amsterdam, un doctorat la Universitatea din Melbourne si a fost bursier post-doctoral la Universitatea din Queensland. Este director fondator al Institute of Network Cultures, care are ca scop explorarea, documentarea si alimentarea potentialului pentru schimbare socio-economica a domeniului noilor media prin evenimente, publicatii si dialog deschis. Ca teoretician, activist si critic internet Lovink a contribuit la conturarea dezvoltarii acestui mediu.

Geert Lovink a fost unul dintre teoreticienii cheie din spatele conceptului de tactical media. Ca activist internet, el descrie tactical media ca “un termen deliberat imprecis, un instrument pentru crearea unor ‘zone de consens temporar’ pe baza unor aliante neasteptate. O alianta temporara de hackeri, artisti, critici, jurnalisti si activisti.“ In esenta, Lovink considera ca aceste noi resurse in care publicul poate deveni participant direct impotriva marilor puteri devin o zona la care pot adera multe tipuri diferite de oameni.

Perspective alternative asupra limbajelor social-politice

Această carte este rezultatul unei excelente cooperări internaţionale, la care au luat parte cercetători şi profesori de prim rang din domeniile istorie, lingvistică, politologie, filozofie, sociologie, arte. Este vorba de colegi din importante institute de studii şi universităţi din Germania, Franţa, Olanda, Ungaria, SUA şi România. Istoria României prin concepte.Perspective alternative asupra limbajelor social-politice este în primul rînd rodul cooperării româno-germane, dintre Universitatea de Vest din Timişoara şi Universitatea Rhein-Westfalen din Aachen. Acesta este cadrul în care relaţia profesională cu profesorul Armin Heinen a generat o Şcoală Doctorală Internaţională de Istorie Conceptuală, una susţinută de Fundaţia Volkswagen. De aici a pornit promovarea doctoranzilor în programe naţionale şi internaţionale, schimbul de profesori şi importante conferinţe dedicate studiului şi înţelegerii mai profunde şi raţionale a istoriei, limbii şi politicii României din secolul al XVIII-lea şi pînă astăzi.

În mediul cultural românesc sînt multe concepte controversate, provocînd dispute politice. Studiul lor, aşa cum a fost făcut de autorii acestui volum, examninează atent, critic-raţional, limbajele social-politice româneşti, clarificînd fragmente din istoria României din secolele al XIX-lea şi al XX-lea. Ele arată că fără schimbarea metodologiei de lucru, în absenţa unei comprehensive history, trecutul continuă să servească excesiv ca material ideologic, cărţile de istorie riscînd să reproducă interpretarea faptelor, evenimentelor şi fenomenelor din trecut, irelevante pentru prezent şi viitor. De exemplu, a vorbi despre revoluţia de la 1848 doar în termenii istoriografiei naţional-naţionaliste a secolului al XIX-lea, a prezenta doar aspectele ei pozitive, fără a explica şi eşecurile ei, iată un bun motiv de a trimite la reflecţie asupra materialului documentar. A vorbi despre acelaşi moment 1848 subliniind doar mediul intelectual de excepţie care a gîndit politica momentului, personalităţile care au pregătit programul revoluţionar sub influenţa culturii franceze (exemplul aceluia de la Bucureşti) şi au construit un guvern revoluţionar provizoriu, fără a dezvălui puţinătatea mediilor urbane româneşti, precaritatea sistemului şcolar (ea a fost observată încă în epocă, între alţii de August Treboniu Laurian inspector şcolar la Iaşi), inexistenţa culturii politice a masei locuitorilor, înseamnă a reununţa la explicarea sensului faptelor şi chiar la obiectivitatea ştiinţifică în favoarea unor mituri ce se dovedesc contraproductive în formarea publicului nostru.

Cartea are o arhitectură proprie, memorabilă prin analize şi încărcatura de idei, imagini şi observaţii provocatoare, puţin obişnuite în istoriografia română. Studiile noastre sînt precise, se bazează pe textele epocilor cercetate şi dezvoltă perspective alternative asupra limbajelor social-politice româneşti. Am reuşit să atragem un număr important de cercetători germani şi români şi, alături de ei, cîte un american, francez, olandez, ungar. Cu toţii au studiat fenomenul românesc din unghiuri noi, stăruind asupra acelor pasaje adesea neglijate din trecut, dar graţie cărora pot fi mai exact descrise şi asumate faptele bune ori minusurile generaţiilor ce au făurit România modernă. Aproape fiecarea autor a încercat să sugereze de ce este necesară resemantizarea noţiunilor ori conceptelor cheie şi cum se poate face aceasta. Ei au dezvăluit sensul conceptelor amintite, aşa cum se prezintă ele în limbajele social-politice româneşti, contextualizîndu-le zonal ori comparîndu-le cu acelea din culturile occidentale.

Aurélien and I met through a social network in the autumn of 2009 and started a correspondence that makes up for a total of 1306 emails sent from 27^th September 2009 to last one received on 30^th November 2010. We wrote each other on an almost daily basis and got to know each other so well that if we could’ve changed roles, we would have done it to live the life of the other, effortlessly.

The idea of “future past present” as a project is in fact a one-line email dating back to 10^th January 2010 in which I let Aurélien know how I came up suddenly with this great thought… He replied immediately out of curiosity and what happened next is that we started working on the project in a weird and wild burst of enthusiasm. Our first postcard was sent on 14^th January 2010. We imagined it as a spontaneous exchange based on the idea of image and sight in time, meant to be entirely private. We have never taken into account the possibility of the existence of a third person simply because the person wasn’t there and couldn’t see. It was just us, some 1500 km apart, choosing randomly the printed reproductions and the real images that would describe the reality we shared in spite of distance and the one-hour Western to Eastern time difference. We used ink to write and real mail to send these images, constantly submitting them to weather and transport. The post mark, the stamp, the blue priority sticker give an unmistakable proof of time and place. They trace the coordinates of an urban tale in which we seem to be placed somewhere above the city, in a constant flight from one image to another.

What we sent each other was a daily dose of description. Our means to render thoughts visible turned us immediately into absent spectators to one another’s lives. We experimented on the real closeness that can exist between two people whom have never met but are together in a time of their own design and in the completeness of their vision, limitless, imperfect and absolutely free. We are not artists, we are opposites. Aurélien is left-handed – together we have written with the two hands of the same body.

Each postcard contains a written image that can also be something felt, heard or imagined. It can tell an absolute truth or a perfect lie. Put them together and they make a narration to be read before going to bed but in reality they are a year from someone’s life. Aurélien and I have spent 10 months working on the project (January-October 2010) out of which 100 days of sending postcards (10 days every month). We’ve met twice in real life, in Bucharest where we tried to have a relationship, but we have failed. The project remains a success.

“future past present” can be anything. In theoretical terms, we’ve also created a travelling museum which makes famous paintings available to the public out of their original context through the means of mass reproduction. The printed reproduction is a symbol of the continuous fight in between word, image, dimension and surface. It’s also something that can be bought. Instead of focusing on masterpieces, we focused on the instantaneous being eternal. And we have paid for it.

A few days after we sent our first postcard, I filled up a form for a fictitious exhibition, trying to escape the close deadline of an exam. Taking the project to school meant to give it a public dimension that includes today not only a third, but a fourth, fifth and many other persons. You participate actively to the life of the image through the means of your own perception. You relate to us through your subjectivity. Our 200 written images are a pretext for you to create more. Aurélien and I have seen and shared the experience. Now we pass it on. It’s your turn to make it neverending.

Feţele de la Xoxoteco

Expozitia va fi deschisa in perioada 5 – 22 octombrie 2010 la UNAgaleria, Str. Budisteanu 10, sector 1, Bucuresti.

Miercuri, 6 octombrie, ora 11:00 la UNAgaleria va avea loc o prezentare a Dr.arh.Juan Benito Artigas, despre acest proiect.

Capela Santa Maria Xoxoteco, din Metzquititlán, statul Hidalgo, este decorata cu picturi murale realizate in secolul al XVI-lea, ce se constituie intr-o opera artistica de o calitate exceptionala.

Picturile sunt figurative, cu trasaturi ferme si cu o bogatie cromatica rar intalnita. De fapt, ne aflam in fata unei opere de arta de prima importanta, puternic expresionista, ce reflecta nasterea unei noi culturi în Noua Spanie (actualul Mexic), ca un amalgam al culturilor mezoamericane si spaniole, fara însa a fi nici una din cele doua, ci o cultura totalmente diferita, foarte interesanta prin ea însasi.

In expozitia “Feţele de la Xoxoteco” putem vedea atat figuri lipsite de gat si trup, desenate cu o linie puternica, derivate din reprezentarile estetice mezoamericane, cat si peisaje in care recunoastem perspectiva Renasterii spaniole. Uneori apar si mesaje

simbolice cu valori comune pentru o mare parte a umanitatii, ca de exemplu acele guri de serpi, larg deschise, care de fapt simbolizeaza gura iadului.

Nudul este reprezentat ca o reflectare a puritatii si adevarului. Trupurile in racursí presupun o buna cunoastere a corpului omenesc, reprezentat cu naturalete, fara exagerari de forma, dar cu o anumita rezerva si naivitate.

Aceste picturi murale sunt de fapt un document antropologic de nepretuit despre credintele religioase si intalnirea dintre doua culturi originale, care ies in evidenta mai ales prin calitatea creatiilor artistice.

Incercam, cu aceasta serie de imagini, sa-i impresionam vizual pe cei care vor privi “Feţele de la Xoxoteco”, prin calitatea exceptionala a acestor opere care sunt un exemplu pentru importanta deosebita pe care o ocupa pictura murala mexicana din toate timpurile.

Expozitia poate fi vizitata in perioada 8 – 18 septembrie 2010

Expoziţia Explicit Memory investighează modul în care interesul pentru suprafaţă, formă şi culoare se poate reloca într-un discurs pictural actual. Este pictura abstractă actuală doar un tribut anacronic adus unui tip decalat de moştenire greenberg-iană? Tablourile lui Constantin Caragea “manipulează” memoria vizuală a privitorului, o exersează şi o provoacă destabilizând clişee de percepţie şi interpretare. Fără a miza pe impactul uneori facil al experimentului, Explicit Memory chestioneză funcţionalitatea unor termeni precum stil, techné, manieră în arta contemporană. Fenomenului actual al reactivării pur muzeale a avangardelor Constantin Caragea îi răspunde printr-o reevaluare conceptuală şi formală a picturalităţii.

Explicit Memory nu e o comemorare, ci aducerea în prezent a unui act creativ şi, nu în ultimul rând, a unui prieten.

"In cea mai recenta incercare de redefinire a muzeului, Bernard Deloche propunea urmatoarea formulare: "muzeul reprezinta o functie specifica, ce poate sau nu (subl.n.) sa imbrace forma unei institutii, al carei obiectiv este sa asigure, prin experienta sensibila, arhivarea si transmiterea culturii inteleasa ca ansamblu de achizitii ce fac dintr-o fiinta genetic umana un om". Fara a insista asupra tuturor conotatiilor, as mentiona doar distinctia intre "functie" si "institutie", care, conform autorului, deschide "pentru o multime de substituti calea pentru recunoasterea statutului de muzeu", dat fiindca "exista si alte mijloace de a exersa aceeasi functie". Daca acceptam reformularea - cu toata dimensiunea ei drastica -, atunci cazul nostru poate fi din nou "revizitat": fragmentul pastrat din Muzeul Kalinderu poate avea cu adevarat functia (independent de absenta unui spatiu institutionalizat propriu) de arhivare a unei experiente sensibile, rezumand si justificand totodata, cultura eclectica la care fondatorul ei a aspirat. Iar aceasta noua lectura mi se pare o alta, inedita, reverenta facuta unui muzeu disparut, dar ale carui urme subzista cu tenacitate si gratie."

Proiectul MOnuMENTS porneste de la necesitatea unei reflectii asupra relatiei deficitare pe care o avem cu istoria si memoria recenta, urmarind o piesa reprezentativa pentru relatia dintre discursul politic si tesutul urban. Aflat in desfasurare, ca un proiect de termen lung, MOnuMENTS urmareste cartografierea tarii pe zone - Dobrogea, Banat, Muntenia, Oltenia, Moldova, Ardeal, Maramures - documentand si arhivand monumentele de toate tipurile de pe intreg teritoriul tarii. Rezultatul va fi o „harta” identitara a tarii prin prisma monumentelor sale.

Monumentele constituie un indiciu asupra felului in care ne privim istoria proprie si pe noi insine, ca popor. Asupra valorilor ideologice ale unei perioade istorice si asupra felului in care ne-am raportat/ne raportam la ele. Asupra raportului dintre arta si politica. Avatarurile suferite de ele in timp sunt un barometru bun al schimbarilor politice si sociale petrecute in spatiul pe care il populeaza.

Documentarea a inceput in 2007, iar prima actiune a avut loc in 2009, pe traseul Constanta-Bucuresti si a constat in depunerea unui buchet de flori la fiecare monument si respectarea unui moment de reculegere in memoria eroilor. Scopul imediat a fost acela de a atrage atentia asupra unor monumente uitate sau aflate intr-o stare de degradare vizibila.

Tipul de cercetare artistica propus nu isi aroga exhaustivitatea si nici obiectivitatea sau tipul de analiza al cercetarii stiintifice, ci propune o meditatie asupra relatiei dintre individ, comunitate si istorie, o intalnire vie intre „ieri” si „azi”, intre mentalitati si valori diferite, intre noi cei de azi si martorii tacuti ai vremurilor trecute. Noteaza diferente intre dezvoltarea urbana si cea rurala, intre gesturi politice/culturale, gesturi individuale sau colective. Tangential, atinge teme precum arta in spatiu public, urbanism, moduri de comunicare, tipuri de comunitati, totalitarism, manipulare, violenta.

Dorim sa opunem stergerii memoriei colective o memorie „vie”, urmarind in timp avatarurile – dislocari fizice sau dislocari de sens, reconstructii etc - suferite de aceste simboluri nationale. Raportul MOnuMENT – MOMENT este definit de cel putin trei momente semnificative pe care vrem sa le aducem in atentie:

Momentul constructiei si inaugurarii monumentului (data, locatie, autor, tehnica, comanditar etc)

Momentul evocat (tema, reprezentarea, titlu, istoric etc)

Momentul fotografierii (starea lui actuala, eventuale modificari, restaurari, reconditionari, semnificatia lui acum etc).

Selectia de imagini prezentata in expozitie se concentreaza asupra figurilor eroilor din diverse perioade istorice. Majoritatea evoca primul sau al doilea razboi mondial. Cele mai vechi, de pe vremea Regelui Ferdinand sau a Regelui Carol, au suferit diverse recosmetizari – regimul comunist nu a demolat toate monumentele anterioare, insa a operat modificari – s-au mai adaugat nume, au fost scoase placute comemorative, unele monumente au fost reamplasate, altele vandalizate.

Proiectul de documentare si cercetare MOnuMENTS a continuat si in Londra, avand curatori pe Lars Vilhelmsen si Karen Ay. In perioada martie - aprilie 2010 am pornit la drum impreuna cu “The Travellers Box Project”, o serie de trei performance-uri adaugand o noua dimensiune proiectului. Observarea prin comparatie a monumentelor din cele doua capitale, Bucuresti si Londra, a permis tragerea unor concluzii interesante privind modurile diferite de raportare la istoria proprie praticate in cele doua spatii, respectul/lipsa de interes fata de insemnele nationale ale trecutului oferind un indiciu asupra relatiei de apreciere/comercializare/conflictuala/indiferenta fata de propriul trecut.

The Travellers Box functioneaza ca discurs artistic, purtat intre artisti, in cadrul caruia atat analiza cat si productia propriu-zisa joaca un rol important. La baza proiectului se afla notiunea de colaborare intre diferitele puncte de vedere ale artistilor, pornind de la interactiunile acestora cu „Cutia”, ca si relatiile care se dezvolta din aceste interactiuni si se manifesta in diferite forme.

În perioada 14-26 mai 2010 vor fi expuse cartile premiate la cel mai prestigios concurs de design de carte din Germania.

Fundaţia Buchkunst din Frankfurt organizeaza in fiecare an concursul book design „Cele mai frumoase carti germane“ (Die schönsten deutschen Bücher). Din peste 700 de titluri prezentate la concurs, 64 au obtinut premii în 2009. Conform traditiei, organizatorii alcatuiesc anual o expozitie cu toate cartile premiate, care itinerează la cele mai importante targuri de carte din lume. Centrul de Carte Germana Bucuresti expune la UNA Galeria colectiile din 2008 si 2009.

Iti plac povestile? Chiar si cele despre regimul comunist? Atunci vino sa cunosti povestea lui Sis!
Fiecare dintre noi avem anumite amintiri fata de perioada comunista.
Amintirile lui Sis sunt ilustrate in caietul cu schite din scoala - de la ora de gramatica, caietul cu schite din Anglia, Suedia, adeverinte si stampile speciale pentru orice maruntis, ilustratii, desene si un casetofon-valiza.

Zidul este o expozitie documentara, volanta, realizata pe langa cartea lui Petr Sis - The Wall, care prezinta copilaria si adolescenta artistului in spaţiul bine delimitat de Cortina de Fier.

Petr Sis
Ilustrator, autor si regizor. S-a nascut la Brno, Cehia in anul 1949; a urmat cursurile Academiei de Arte in Praga si Colegiul Regal de Arte in Londra. Debutul sau ca regizor a fost unul remarcabil. Inca de la începutul carierei sale a castigat Ursul de aur la Festivalul de Film Berlinul de Vest pentru un scurt metraj de animatie. Colaborarea cu Bob Dylan la albumul You Got to Serve Somebody i-a adus in anul 1983 premiile Cine Golden Eagle si Grand Prix Toronto. In prezent, filmele sale fac parte din colectia permanentă a Muzeului de Arta Moderna (MOMA), din New York.

De-a lungul anilor a publicat peste 20 carti, castigand premii ca: The New York Times Book Review pentru cea mai buna carte ilustrata a anului pentru operele Rainbow Rhino, Beach Ball, Follow the Dream, Komodo!,The Three Golden Keys; medalia de aur acordata de Society of Illustration pentru Komdo!.

Petr Sis a contribuit cu mai bine de o mie de desene pentru The New York Times Book Review, iar ilustratiile sale au aparut in revista Time, The Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Esquire si multe altele.

In 2007, Petr Sis a publicat The Wall: Growing Up Behaind The Iron Curtain. Povestea unui baietel caruia ii placea sa deseneze, dar care din pacate a trebuit sa se supuna regimului comunist.

Archaeologies of the Present/ Memory, History, Experience

In recent years a tendency has been observed toward reference to the archaeological on the part of the arts and humanities. This pertains to the reactivation of the principle of excavation, recovery and documenting as well as questions about the mediality of knowledge, the composition of archives and the selective nature of memory and the effects of inclusion and exemption associated with it.

The specific grasp of artists on archaeological methods of uncovering, storing and analyzing finds a decisive amelioration here through its interest in the present. The present is also subject to the ongoing processes of disappearance.

For documentarism in the art field, the ambition of the testimonial -- on the basis of subjective artistic criteria -- is the focal point. Nevertheless, elements of narration and fiction or, "how it might have been" arise. Such a testimonial as counter-hegemonic narration, which implies past, present and future and which can be read as an artistic contribution to the societal production of realities, builds a specific potentiality.

Media Art at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig is an art form still in its infancy, and as such finds itself placed in a field undergoing dynamic changes, the development and outcome of which remain largely unpredictable. Contrary to traditional courses of study at the HGB such as Painting and Photography, which move within a clearly defined medium, Media Art cannot rely on an extensive, well-established vocabulary. During study, image selection, media formats and presentations should be examined anew and developed to cater to the students' needs. The following skills are therefore fostered during the course: the testing and development of artistic and technical competence, the acquisition of communicative and organisational skills, as well as consideration of the correspondence of one's work to current artistic, social and political questions. Through group and project work students not only have the chance to discover their strengths and recognise their preferences, but are also confronted with the organisational demands of displaying works from their conception right through to their realisation and presentation in an exhibition. In addition to teacher supervision in foundation and core studies, students can also call upon the expertise of academic colleagues. For example, it is possible to make use of a professionally supervised audiovisual lab or to ask for supervision with the programming of more complex applications.

In core studies students may attend the classes offered by Alba D'Urbano, Joachim Blank, Ralf Urban Bühler, Helmut Mark and Günther Selichar.

In terms of content, the topic of study is not only determined by discussing possibilities of "new media" in contrast to traditional media or the increasing mechanisation of society through digital media, but also the analysis of space, time, attention, communication and participation or interaction respectively. Consideration of the effects of a media-transmitted, grossly accelerated global perception of an image of the world and of its people serves as the basis of this discussion.

The Media Art course at the College offers students the possibility to critically deal with artistic, contextual and media-specific problems. The aim of the course is to develop an individual working method and designate one's own independent artistic standpoint. Students may also choose from four specialist classes after foundation studies or the Vordiplom.

Asociaţia Persona pentru educaţie creativă în parteneriat cu Universitatea de Arte din Bucureşti - UNAgaleria anunţă organizarea unei prezentări publice a proiectului european A.D.A.P.T. - Tehnologii avansate digitale pentru artele interpretative - care va avea loc la Galeria UNA, în zilele de 5 şi 6 noiembrie a.c., orele 18,00, str. General Budişteanu nr. 10.

După scurte descrieri ale procesului creativ la care participă artiştii români Adriana Zaharia şi Darie Budeanu, alături de artişti portughezi, cehi şi belgieni, se vor proiecta filme care au documentat întâlnirea artiştilor de la Praga din perioada 17-23 octombrie a.c. Publicul este invitat să adreseze întrebări participanţilor în timpul discuţiei ce va urma programului de filme.

În seara zilei de 6 noiembrie a.c., suntem onoraţi să îl avem ca invitat pe Mircea Florian. Acesta va susţine prezentarea “Când va muri multiMedia”, despre tehnici digitale utilizate în proiecte muzicale. După proiectarea filmelor dedicate unor proiecte deja realizate de asociaţia cehă Ciant, partener al Persona, publicul este invitat la o discuţie pe marginea materialelor vizualizate.

Seria de evenimente la care participă artiştii implicaţi în proiectul A.D.A.P.T. va continua în prima parte a lunii mai 2010, printr-o colaborare cu Universitatea Naţională de Arte din Bucureşti şi cu Universitatea Naţională de Artă Teatrală şi Cinematografică.
Sunt invitaţi să participe la prezentări studenţi, artişti, critici de specialitate, organizaţii neguvernamentale, instituţii de cultură.

Proiectul ADAPT - Tehnologii avansate digitale pentru artele interpretative - este realizat cu sprijinul financiar al Comisiei Europene prin programul Cultura 2007, Primăriei Municipiului Bucureşti-Centrul de Proiecte Culturale ArCuB şi în parteneriat cu asociaţiile Ciant (Cehia), Transcultures (Belgia) şi EIRA (Portugalia).

These four artists represent different voices in society and art scene in Norway today. The artists living in Norway describe their situation as being a meeting point between their original cultural identity and their daily influence. The other two have residencies in other European countries and own a more distant perspective to the Norwegian way. “Norwegianness” is also an ironic reference to the fright of an increasing multiculturalism and globalism. Cristina David lives in Romania, and she prefers working with videos and installations. On the level of production her works are also relational in the matter of including people in her narratives. Humour has a great part in her work. "I like to see the reality through the tales, to exercise my mind and to place stories where none may exist".

Nirmal Singh Dhunsi works in the field between his Norwegian and Indian identity, claiming he is conscious of this symbiosa and the value of it. In his universe we find a mix of Mickey Mouse and Krishna, both claiming to be verified.

Nomzi Kumalo is born and educated in South-Africa, now living in Norway. Her motiv is in concret and abstract sense herself or seemingly prosaic but still mysterious motivs. Her manner is expressive.

Evolution and Strategies of Italian Fashion System

The lecture aims to introduce the main features of the Italian fashion system. More precisely, the presentation will stress the value of the Italian fashion industry in terms of total turnover, employment rate and commercial balance through a snapshot of some key economic data. In order to understand the origins of Italian Fashion System, a look will be also shed towards the time of French haute couture and to some French styling campaigns from the 40’s and 50’s.The focus will be then shifted to some success factors of the Italian fashion system and, namely, the supply chain, the diversified structure of industrial fashion groups, the industry clusters, creativity and the unique combination of image and communication, i.e. the role of styling. Some concluding remarks on careers in fashion will be made at the end of the presentation.

The new WRO Art Center (Centrum Sztuki WRO), located at Plac Teatralny 5, Wrocław, arose from the experience and activity of the WRO Foundation Media Art Center, founded in 1989, the only independent organization in Poland specializing in contemporary art, media and technology. The WRO Art Center features regular presentations of contemporary art intertwined with the development of communications tools and processes.

The WRO Art Center offers exhibitions, showings, concerts, screenings, lectures, workshops and publications featuring both Polish and international art. It is designed for artists, curators, critics and art theoreticians as well as for the active and creative culture-oriented public, while original projects cultivating creativity encourage children and teenagers to get familiar with media art. The Center’s aims are to support artistic and educational activities, and to organize international cultural and intellectual exchanges by expanding the WRO collection, making it accessible, collaborating with renowned international art galleries and institutions and through a program of residencies for artists and curators. The WRO Art Center’s gallery, laboratory, archives, reading room and offices are housed in the renovated heritage interiors in the loft of the former Otto Stiebler coffee-roasting plant at the corner of Wrocław’s Plac Teatralny and Widok Street. The specially designed Widok Street façade and entryway also serves as a projection screen in the public space. The Center is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday. The WRO Art Center is funded by the City of Wrocław and is based on the agreement between the WRO Foundation and the Wrocław municipal authorities.

FEMINIST ART IN MEXICO: A PERSONAL JOURNEY

Is feminist art relevant in today's globalized world?

Monica Mayer will share her experiences as a feminist artist over the past thirty years and discuss the social, political and aesthetic issues that have interested different generations of women artists. Monica Mayer is present in Romania by the courtesy of the Embassy of Mexico in Romania, for Perspective 2008 project, curator Olivia Niţiş.

Mónica Mayer (Mexico City, 1954), studied visual arts at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City and in 1980 obtained a masters degree in sociology of art at Goddard College while participating at the Feminist Studio Workshop in Los Angeles, California.

A major area of Mayer’s work has been performance art. In 1983 she formed Polvo de Gallina Negra, the first feminist art group in Mexico with Maris Bustamante. The group presented performances in the media and different social interventions. Mayer also formed the group Tlacuilas y Retrateras, another feminist art group integrated by the participants in a two year workshop she gave to artists and art historians. Mayer has also performed on her own or with Victor Lerma in different festivals in Mexico and Japan, as well as presenting her work in museums. However, most of her performance pieces are social interventions designed specifically for each place and situation. Since 1989 she has participated in Pinto mi Raya with Victor Lerma, which is an on-going piece on the Mexican art system (www.pintomiraya.com.mx). She is co-director of the Pinto mi Raya archive, which specializes in contemporary Mexican art.

A project run by the Studio for art practices and debates (coordinated by Catalin Gheorghe & Cristian Nae)

Assuming a puzzling impossibility of recording recent history, the exhibition takes as a starting point the erosion of the historical speech inscribed within public icons and effigies, constituted at the crossroad of fragmentary narratives and empty rhetorical speeches which legitimate them, denying the possibility of their solid coagulation. They facilitate critical numbness and constantly reproduce forgeries of public values seemingly erected overnight.

Playfully mimicking the masks of borrowed formal identities, the works in the show assume the possibility of exercising criticism by temporary appropriation, simulation and redistribution of conventional signs of power. Their common discursive practice lies in reinterpreting “monumentality” as sculptural embodiment of transience, imprecision and contingency. They stimulate conflicting aesthetics and critically use their symbolic potentiality. Ironically approached in its political and ideological function, the monument, understood as the name of the economy of public values and sign of persistence and durability, is transformed into a performative element of the proposed scenario, being often twisted on the verge of critical parody.

Referring in particular to the expectancies towards the stakes of contemporary public sculpture, the exhibition’s discourse aims to perform a temporary artistic intervention on the socio-political Romanian present-day representations, by constantly theatrically staging their own situation, caught between uncertain future projections, ideological heritage and blurred present-day public identities. „Poto and Cabengo are two twins from South California who refuse to communicate with the people around them and invent a language of their own. The director Jean-Pierre Gorin makes in 1979 a documentary about them; the twins are eventually normalized through a learning process which deprives them not only of their imagination, but also of the fascination they had on the others.

This story was the starting point of a photographic investigation about the I-you relation which can become I-I, about the endless movement of the glance from one figure to the other. Poto&Cabengo is a series of staged double self-portraits in different places and situations, a way of telling personal and fictive stories in a certain location.

Project Zagreb: Transition as Condition, Strategy, and Practice

Transition is a condition that creates opportunities for architecture and urbanism. Zagreb is the perfect site for examining this generative dynamic: practicing in conditions of continuous instability, its architects and planners developed strategies for creatively engaging the conditional and openended— for anticipating and instrumentalizing the condition of irresolution. Moving between texts, maps, and diagrams, Project Zagreb reads the city as an open work, dynamic but coherent, in which architecture plays an active role in the formation of both urban practices and the city itself. This project is presented through four projections including diagrams, historical photographs, historical films, as well as contemporary stop-frame films.

Romantic Economies

Anetta Mona Chisa was born in Romania. She studied sculpture and conceptual art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia (1994-2000) and since 2002 she is teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, New Media department.

In 2006 she won the Slovak young visual artists award Oskar Cepan and was a resident artist at ISCP New York City. Her works have been showed recently at Milano Flash Art Show, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Vienna, Futura gallery Prague, f.a.i.t. gallery Cracow, Prague Biennial, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien Berlin, Space gallery Bratislava, Turner Contemporary Margate, Museums Quartier Vienna and Billboart Gallery Europe.

Most of her works are contextual, based on personal stories and very often she plays with the concept of access to different forms of power: professional, political, ideological, and geographical. Her artistic practices vary from stealing in private art galleries, going to fortuneteller to talking about sexy men and doing porn movies and photographs with her often collaborator Lucia Tkacova.

In his works, Luchezar Boyadjiev examines the visual and aesthetic consequences of the politic, economic, social and relational changes in ex-socialist capital cities like Sofia,Bucharest, Budapest, Moscow but also Istanbul, reshuffling an urban world that has been filled up with meanings.

Luchezar Boyadjiev, born in 1957, graduates as art historian at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia in 1980. He has been taking part in the most important Biennials of the world since the beginning of the 1990s (Prague and Moscow in 2007, Singapore and Iasi/Periferic 7 in 2006, Istanbul and Venice in 2005 etc.). Photography, Conceptual Art and New Media are his main fields of interest. Luchezar Boyadjiev also works as art critic, publicist and curator.

PRIVATE HABITATS subjectively describes in a cinematographic-like narrative the perspectival dissolution of the everyday urban life, by means of a parallel montage of pictorial fragments of intimate living space, contrasted with painterly and sculptural representations of urban atopias. The private habitats suggested imaginary reconstruct the disrupted space of an ordinary Romanian apartment, in which a trivial and claustrophilic existence of anonymous individuals takes place in an absurd routine and lack of human communication. The space of this uncanny narrative questions, sometimes suspending, the borders between the real, the phantasmal and the virtual, as well as those between the private and the public space. In my attempt to write a text for the exhibition Passato Prossimo, I cannot escape a definition of photographers that I recently heard, a definition that for me is equal in profoundness to a saying of Hagi, the football player: „Football is football and the ball is round”. It is said that there are two kinds of photographers: the hunter and the farmer... Fortunately, Michele Bressan and Bogdan Girbovan do not fit into any of these categories...

At the time when Michele has started taking photographs, quite recently, Tom Waits launched three albums at once: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards... and, similarly, one could define his style of photography: a mixture of rush with sentimentalism and possession, a combo of hunter and farmer and something more. Something tender which cannot be explained but pleases the eye.

At the time when Bogdan began photographing, nothing important was going on. Hence, his images „have a voice of their own” ... quite literally! As in: the farmer meets the hunter and tells him something. Something brief that cannot be put into words yet it is pleasurable...

The exhibition in UNAgaleria is also a demonstration of craftsmanship in developing gelatin silver prints. Ten photographs of 100x150 cm., fiber based matte paper mounted on aluminium, limited edition of five plus a few small pictures perfect for framing, unlimited edition. On one hand leica format photographs taken with about 15 different cameras (indeed, Bressan carries a small camera in every pocket for fear of missing out on something) with grainy negatives and on the other hand medium format images, pure 6x7, taken with a heavy camera that releases the shutter in a loud yet firm manner. These two students are worth looking after in their future artistic activity and, moreover, together with their peers, they shape a generation of students from the photography and video department that shows a lot of promise for the future.

The works presented are deformed images that, due to the laws of perspective, can be recomposed from a certain spot in order to form the correct image. The images realised through anamorphosis can be recomposed: either directly, in front of an observer placed at the key spot, or indirectly, in certain reflective surfaces (regular, conical or cylindrical mirrors). Anamorphosis can be a useful technique in fine arts because it forms images that are abstract at the same time as mimetic and also because it can be recomposed from a certain key spot that can be aesthetically exploited by the artist. Moreover, the anamorphoses harbour a degree of surprise and interactivity with the observer - participant in the re-shaping of the correct image.

works from the Kalinderu collection of the Museum of the National University of Arts Bucharest in a dialogue with contemporary works by: Reka Csapo-Dup, Darie Dup, Adrian Ilfoveanu, Elena Nuca, Marius Purice, Gabriela Tofan

Of all the copies in marble and bronze from famous works of art, copies chosen and contracted by Kalinderu in the workshops of fin-de-siècle Florence, a few fragments are still with us.
The current exhibition pays hommage to them trying to restore their identity and link them to contemporary creation.

The exhibition is divided into 3 parts: The Favourites, The books of 010 Publishers and Student’s work, and is designed by Piet Gerards, Hanna Donker and Maud van Rossum.

The Favourites

will show the most favourite designs of 25 Dutch Designers. Each designer will choose and elucidate on one work of their oeuvre. The participants are: Hans Bockting/Sabine Bockting, Baer Cornet, Frits Deys, Edo van Dijk, Bram de Does, Piet Gerards, Mieke Gerritzen, Lucas de Groot, Melle Hammer, Reynoud Homan, Ton Homburg/Marty Schoutsen, Erik Kessels, Rene Knip, Jacques Koeweiden, Richard van der Laken/Pepijn Zurburg, Richard Niessen/Esther de Vries, Martin Pyper, Geert Setola, Lex reitsma, Lies Ros, Fred Smeijers, Ewald Spieker, Gerard Unger, Chris Vermaas, Thomas Widdershoven.

The books of 010 Publishers

Monday 19 Nov, Hans Oldewarris, director of 010 Publishers Rotterdam, will have a lecture on book publishing. He will illustrate this lecture with a selection of his published books over the last 25 years. This selection will be shown in the exhibition.

Student’s work

Each student will choose a piece of their own work and present it together with their rationale for choosing it.

Professors Michal Fronek and Jan Nemecek have encouraged five of their students to spend almost a month at the glass workshop Kvetna, where superior handmade glassware that is traditionally known for its exclusive quality is produced.
The objects produced by the students are the results of inspiration from the glass shapes designed by the great masters from the past and the creation of their own experimental designs of applied art. During this project, students were asked to underline a specific feature that the glass artists of Kvetna have – the ability to design objects similar to those from the past, modelling the glass in the same way. This experiment proved very interesting for both parties involved – manufacturers and students -who succeeded in creating valuable objects of innovative design.

Growth 2003-2005

“Growth is a project in which I am reconstructing and re-photographing pictures that my dad took of me and my three little sisters when we were children. I am trying to make the new photograph look as similar as possible to the old one: the place and the composition are the same.
I have always been very attracted by the photograph’s ability to cross time and create this kind of comparisons. There is something sad, almost tragic, about looking at old photographs compared to new ones and seeing how people and things have changed or grown up. After all, it is said that time has been accepted as a common means of measuring life because people are not able nor willing to see the change in themselves. In the pictures it seems as if we were trying to go back to our childhood but unavoidably failed – there is no return in time.
I am also interested in family photographs and the way they are taken, stored and (not so often) looked at. Anyone with any family history can tell that, although the family pictures are supposed to tell a story about a happy, unanimous family, growing up with other people is never simple.
The project is still going on and I would even like to reconstruct the pictures again after 20 years. Unfortunately a part of the growth and life is that it is impossible to predict how things will turn out.” (Wilma Hurskainen)
